UM Terminals secures CBA Responsible Care status

Posted on 28 April, 2025

UM Terminals has been certified as part of the Chemical Business Association’s Responsible Care Programme.

Responsible Care is the chemical industry’s commitment to continual improvement in health, safety, security and environmental (HSSE) performance.

In the UK, Responsible Care covers the whole of the chemical supply chain – from manufacturers, through to distributors and logistics companies.

Compliance with Responsible Care is expected for all CBA member companies involved in the trading, distribution, handling, movement and storage of chemicals.

Rebecca Broughton-Lee, UM Group EHS Manager, who oversaw the application for Responsible Care certification, said: “We became a member of the CBA last year, and after following the criteria of the Responsible Care Programme we have now been approved by the CBA committee and can display the RCP logo.

“This has been an important focus for the business over the last couple of months and was a rigorous process involving a detailed on-site audit, self-assessment and the tracking of various performance indices.

“It is similar to other certifications such as ISO in that the CBA is an external body scrutinising how you do things within your organisation.

“For a business like UM Terminals, external verification of our systems and processes is hugely important. By securing Responsible Care status, we have demonstrated that we are doing what we say we do in terms of best practice in looking after customer products.

“It shows our customers, potential customers, supply chain partners and members of our own team that our health, safety, security and environmental credentials are of the highest possible standards. We now have to maintain these standards as the Responsible Care Programme involves an annual audit.”

In addition to receiving the Responsible Care Programme’s Certificate of Commitment, Rebecca will also now sit on the CBA’s Health & Safety Committee along with other CBA members.

The CBA is recognised as the voice of the UK chemical supply chain with a long and illustrious heritage extending over 100 years of delivering for its members.
